When most people hear the word cannabis, their mind goes straight to "gets you high", i.e. a huge shortcut assimilating cannabis to one of its compounds, namely the cannabinoid known as THC.
However, things are a lot more complex - and frankly, a lot more exciting, promising and uplifting. The cannabis plant comprises a multiplicity of cannabinoids. You probably heard of THC and CBD, the two most well known ones. But there are also CBC, CBN, CBG... and many others. Plus a variety of flavonoids and terpenes that also effect the taste and scent.
While state and federal laws have long banned research into cannabis, preventing further investigation into the nature and effect of its compounds, things are changing. And it's a great thing! New research is starting to pour in from all over the world, and the body of scientific knowledge regarding cannabis and cannabinoids is growing fast.
What is the Entourage Effect?
Simply put, research shows that cannabis compounds function better together. In other words, while taking the CBD molecule alone is pretty good, you will get FAR more of the benefits that CBD can bring to the table when CBD is associated with the many other compounds of the cannabis plant. This is referred to as the entourage effect, or the symphony effect.
The interactions between the cannabis compounds can synergistically increase or even multiply numerous individual benefits of each individual compounds. The cannabis plant comes with a spectrum of actives (cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, micronutrients...). If you want a product that delivers the fullness of the entourage effect, you want to look for 'full spectrum' products. By opting for full spectrum products, you put at your service the full healing power of the cannabis plant by leveraging the entourage effect.
At NuuMe, our mission is to create the most therapeutic cannabis products on the market. So let's just say that the entourage effect is at the very core of our daily preoccupations. :-) Now entourage effect is a bit of a buzzword, but for us, as organic farmers and organic manufacturers with a mission to create life changing cannabis products, our job is twofold:
- design, grow and harvest cannabis characterized by an incredibly full spectrum of therapeutic actives.
- extract this cannabis in a way that allows us to capture the fullness of the spectrum without damaging it, in order
To that end, we have developed our own proprietary cannabis genetics and our own extraction method with one objective in mind: maximizing the spectrum of our products, for our customers to enjoy the full healing power of this God-given plant.
We have developed our own strain of cannabis genetics, with the intent to obtain the fullest spectrum possible. This is the result of 6+ years of efforts and R&D. At that point, we also had to create a very tuned in, gentle extraction process aimed at capturing this exceptionally full spectrum of actives, in order to maximize the entourage effect and in turn the efficacy of the products. The result is a line of products that is simply life changing. We achieved that and this is why we keep hearing from our customers that no other CBD products compare to NuuMe's.
How Does the Entourage Effect Impact CBD Oil?
It is believed that cannabinoids and terpenoids present in cannabis interact with each other as well as with the brain's receptors. Many people who browse their CBD options online or in stores often encounter obscure terminology such as:
- CBD isolate,
- Full-spectrum
- Broad-spectrum
These mentions are intended to distinguish wether:
- CBD is present as a standalone molecule (i.e. no entourage effect): that is products made with/from CBD isolate
- CBD is present along with all other compounds (maximum entourage effect) : full spectum products (like NuuMe)
- CBD is present along with other compounds, but THC has been removed (decent entourage effect): broad spectrum. That is the option of choice for people wanting therapeutics but who do not want to test positive for THC at their job.
Broad-spectrum CBD oil is closer in the chemical composition of full-spectrum CBD oil in terms of its variety of cannabinoids and other compounds. Full-spectrum and broad spectrum however have major differences.
The process to go from a full spectrum extract t a broad spectrum extract is known as remediation, meaning removal of the THC. Typically this implies subjecting your hemp extract to significant heat to degrade the THC. Unfortunately, while doing so, many other compounds get lost as well and their concentration typically drops significantly. We are big advocates of full spectrum and typically recommend broad spectrum for customers worried about THC showing up in a drug test for work (think doctors, nurses, pilots, law enforcements, truckers, teachers...).
